What they mean, how they differ from storage, and how to avoid charges

What are Demurrage and Detention?
Demurrage and detention are shipping line charges that apply when free time on a container is exceeded. Demurrage applies while the full container sits inside the port or terminal. Detention applies after the container is gated out and kept beyond the allowed period before returning it.
